Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, is on the verge of etching his name in the record books. He is just 97 runs shy of becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing, 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.

Jaiswal’s consistent performance has been a major positive for India, particularly during this transitional period in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley showcased his exceptional talent. However, his brilliant effort wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a formidable 371-run target for England, India was stunned by the composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, handing England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
Despite the team's setback, Jaiswal’s individual form remains a significant source of hope for India as they aim to rebound at Edgbaston. In his 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow him on the list, having reached 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his stylish strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and even surpass these cricketing legends, providing India with a crucial boost in this must-win Test match.
